Lakelight Roundtable

You Are Invited

Conversations around ideas that matter…

Civil discussion from different points of view. Imagine That.

The focus of these evenings is not the “talk” (presentation) per se, but the “big questions” it raises. This leads naturally to discussing ways we wrestle with and resolve these questions as they confront us in life. Over a leisurely meal, the heart of each Roundtable is its rich conversation with the mix of people, perspectives and experiences seated around you.

Roundtable evenings are by-invitation, and dedicated to fostering dialogue that explores the intersection of contemporary academic, cultural, and Judeo-Christian thought on issues related to science, the arts, life, and faith.

People find these gatherings to be consistently stimulating and delightful. Learn more about the history and details in the drop-down menu on the right

  • Over the past 20 years, hundreds of Boston-area professors and community leaders have engaged in Cambridge Roundtable discussions at Harvard and MIT, adding depth and clarity to their lives professionally and personally.

Since 2014, Dartmouth began adapting the Cambridge Roundtable, offering three Roundtable gatherings per year. Mike Woodruff (Christ Church Lake Forest) attended one of these events and wanted to bring the idea to the North Shore.

Lakelight Institute is organizing the first event in what we hope is an ongoing series. Roundtables include quality conversations around ideas that matter, which are rare in modern society. Participation includes doing some pre-reading and being willing to engage in civil discussion over a nice meal. The author/researcher will join and answer questions around their work as an added bonus.

  • The Character Gap, by Christian B. Miller (Oxford University Press)

We like to think of ourselves, our friends, and our families as decent people. We may not be saints, but we are still honest, relatively kind, and mostly trustworthy. Miller argues here that we are badly mistaken in thinking this. Hundreds of recent studies in psychology tell a different story: that we all have serious character flaws that prevent us from being as good as we think we are - and that we do not even recognize that these flaws exist. But neither are most of us cruel or dishonest. Instead, Miller argues, we are a mixed bag.

Christian B. Miller | A.C. Reid Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University and Director of the Character Project, funded by the John Templeton Foundation and Templeton World Charity Foundation. He is the author of over 75 papers as well as two books with Oxford University Press, Moral Character: An Empirical Theory (2013) and Character and Moral Psychology (2014).
