Data
The Surgeon General has issued an advisory on the mental health and well-being of parents. (All data from this report)
The state of parents’ mental health: 41% of parents say that most days they are so stressed they cannot function and 48% say that most days their stress is completely overwhelming compared to other adults (20% and 26%, respectively).
Financial stress: In the last decade, child care prices have grown by approximately 26% in the U.S.
Changes in parenting expectations: time spent weekly on primary child care has increased by 40% among mothers from 8.4 hours in 1985 to 11.8 hours in 2022, and by 154% among fathers from 2.6 hours in 1985 to 6.6 hours in 2022.
Technology: Nearly 70% of parents say parenting is now more difficult than it was 20 years ago, because of new technology and social media.
The mental health epidemic happening among young people: Nearly 3-in-4 parents are extremely or somewhat worried that their child will struggle with anxiety or depression.
So be kind to parents. And let’s take care of one another.
