No One Is Exempt

ICYMI

  • Lakelight hosted Princeton Professor Robert George this week. You can watch his talk on Freedom here.

    • "The task before us as Americans, as Christians, is one from which no one is exempt. There is no one who doesn't have a role to play in restoring, healing, and getting our culture into the shape that we need it to be in...It's not just for intellectuals. It's not just for pastors. It's for everybody."

  • Ross Douthat believes the time is ripe for a religious awakening. (NYT) We’d support it.

    • “The new-atheist idea that the weakening of organized religion would make the world more rational and less tribal feels much more absurd in 2024 than it did in 2006.”

  • Jean Twenge writes about what it means that “most young people in the U.S. no longer believe their country is anything special” (The Atlantic)

  • A Liberal considers why Black Men are drifting from the Democratic party. (The Atlantic)

    • “Some progressives seem to imagine minority voters as mythical beings, electoral angels who radiate light and virtue. In their minds, the Democratic Party is a Marvel movie coalition of Nice Whites and Saintly Blacks and Browns who team up every four years to try to save the country from the Bad Whites: the hodgepodge of unsavory working-class whites and car-dealership-owning whites and Christian-nationalist whites who make up Trump’s coalition. But people of color are people, not saints or saintly monoliths, and the cost of this idealization has been a certain blindness in Democratic circles to the actual, rather than imagined, political landscape within minority communities.”

Deep Dive

  • The Gender Gap in American Politics

  • On The Issues Themselves

    • College-educated + Women = Abortion Women with college degrees, who are generally more financially secure than other women, name abortion as one of the key issues deciding their vote.

    • Non-College-educated + Men = Inflation While inflation affects everyone, it hits non-college-educated voters who feel they are falling behind hardest, especially now that the unemployment rate has been rising among those with less than a high school diploma.

  • Media Sources:

    • Men often spend time on X and Reddit, and many listen to podcasts and YouTube personalities concentrating on gaming, sports and politics.

    • Women are more likely to frequent TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. Many seem more focused on content about personal growth, true crime and style.

  • The Divide is Greatest Among Gen Z:

    • Some 66 percent of women ages 18 to 39 said they were likely to vote for Harris in an ABC/Ipsos poll published on October 27.

    •  But only 46 percent of men from the same age bracket planned to vote for Harris and 51 percent for Trump.

One Last Thing

“The English word hospitality originates from the same Latin root as the word hospital. A hospital is literally a ‘home for strangers.’ Of course, it has come to mean a place of healing. There is a link between being welcomed and being healed.”
